Twelve Apostles Fynbos II

Twelve Apostles Fynbos II

Hermien van der Merwe2021

The three linos (Apostles Fynbos I – III) were made as a commission for a hotel in Sea Point, Cape Town. The Fynbos grows on the Twelve Apostles side of Table Mountain on the Atlantic seaboard.

While cutting into the lino with her carving tools, she looked for similarities between fynbos and human beings. As humans, we too, must sometimes undergo a process of cutting away to ultimately show our true beauty. Fynbos, likewise, gets scorched by veldfires, to produce new life and a better flowering season.

Hermien used her body weight as a human printing press, standing on the lino block and transferring the ink onto the paper.
